Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence have a strong impact on our professional and private lives. The summer school “IoT meets AI”, which took place at Werk1 offered international students and professionals four days of deep insights on the overlaps of IoT and AI.
The team around Marc-Oliver Pahl (TUM), Dr. Fabian Rhein (Siemens) and Catharina Vos (Siemens CKI / TUM International GmbH) had invested a significant portion of their time on setting up the event and a nice working environment for the 32 participants. The team was supported by around 30 support people from TUM and Siemens to enable the event.
The concept combined presentations and tandem talks (especially on the first day) by experts from from Siemens, Technical University of Munich (TUM), Institut Mines-Télécom (IMT), EURECOM and TU Berlin with a hackathon on four challenges:
Challenge 1: Using SIMATIC IoT and AI devices equipped with multiple environment sensors to control an AGV with Linux and ROS
Challenge 2: Using the SIMATIC open controller with LINUX and ROS to control a SIEMENS robot arm which gets the target position by a SIMATIC AI component combined with a vision sensor (advised by Siemens)
Challenge 3: Implementing a full IoT processing chain from sensors to visualization (advised by TUM)
Challenge 4: Environmental monitoring (advised by IMT)
After three and a half full days of intense hacking, exciting lectures and socializing events with Bavarian food, the four teams pitched their solutions to a jury. The winning team (challenge 1) presented a robot arm equipped with a Siemens network processor with its digital twin running in parallel. After awarding the certificates the event closed and the participants went home with hopefully a lot of unique and inspiring impressions.
